چکیده

Massive amounts of agricultural and industrial water worldwide are polluted by different types of contaminants that harm the environment and impact human health. Removing the contaminants from effluents by adsorbent materials made from abundant, inexpensive polysaccharides is a feasible approach to deal with this problem. In this research, alginate beads combined with two types of cellulose, starch or xylan were synthesized. Their average diameters in airand freeze-dried conditions were assessed by optical microscopy. Differences in morphology were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Their capacity for water uptake, their sorption capabilities for a model cationic pollutant and their charge density was investigated in relationship to their composition and their surface characteristics. Their interaction with water was evaluated using low-field NMR spectroscopy. It was found that nanocrystalline cellulose added the most to the beads’ sorption capacity for cationic contaminants while xylan admixture created the beads with the highest water sorption after lyophilization.

Alginate and Algal-Based Beads for the Sorption of Metal Cations: Cu(II) and Pb(II)

Alginate and algal-biomass (Laminaria digitata) beads were prepared by homogeneous Ca ionotropic gelation. In addition, glutaraldehyde-crosslinked poly (ethyleneimine) (PEI) was incorporated into algal beads. The three sorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX): the sorption occurs in the whole mass of the sorbents. Sorp...

Synthesis of phosphate-embedded calcium alginate beads for Pb(II) and Cd(II) sorption and immobilization in aqueous solutions

The phosphate-embedded calcium alginate beads were successfully synthesized based on sodium alginate, calcium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium hydrogen carbonate. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted to characterize the morphology and structure of the phosphate-embedded calcium alginate beads. The effects of pH ...

A Comparison of Palladium Sorption Using Polyethylenimine Impregnated Alginate-Based and Carrageenan-Based Algal Beads

Two kinds of algal beads were prepared using a carrageenan-based alga (Chrondrus crispus) and an alginate-based alga (Laminara digitata) ionotropically gelled with K(I) and Ca(II), respectively: the process consists of biopolymer partial extraction followed by hydrogel formation. The beads were modified with branched polyethylenimine (bPEI) and glutaraldehyde (GA) using the impregnation method ...

Dielectric properties of alginate beads and bound water relaxation studied by electrorotation.

The electrical and dielectric properties of Ba2+ and Ca2+ cross-linked alginate hydrogel beads were studied by means of single-particle electrorotation. The use of microstructured electrodes allowed the measurements to be performed over a wide range of medium conductivity from about 5 mS/m to 1 S/m. Within a conductivity range, the beads exhibited measurable electrorotation response at frequenc...
